Okedo Taiko - Daibyoushi-daiko Style - United States
Okedo are drums with heads hand sewn and held onto a lightweight body with rope. The skins are hand processed in our shop from fresh hides and are of the highest quality for long wear and excellent tone. The body is made of vertical grain redwood staves with a slight curve on the sides, finished smooth on the inside and reinforced on the ends with high tension banding. The rope for all okedo is high quality marine nylon. Two styles of okedo are available. Daibyoushi-daiko are okedo with heads 24 inches or smaller and have a length approximately equal to the diameter of the heads. Oshime-daiko have a length approximately 1.25 times the diameter of the head. Daibyoushi-daiko in the smaller sizes are popular for carrying on stage while dancing. Oshime-daiko in larger sizes are used by some groups as their big drum as a less expensive and lighter, yet visually impressive alternative to a large odaiko. Small okedo fit well with shime and small nagado to make a set with different sounds and pitches. Large Picture. |

Pakawaj - India
Nice deep tones with this wonderful instrument. A very supplemental instrument to Dhrupad, classical North Indian music. The treble head is a thick head (certainly thicker than the Tabla head), and the bass head does not have a gob, so it is up the the drummer to apply the wheat paste gob to obtain the desired pitch or tone. Palm Drum (Single) - United States
The Palm Drum measures 8" x 16". It has a closed bottom so that all of the sound comes out of the spout. The spout measures about 3" across its opening, which is on the same plane with the drum head. Playing technique involves sliding the palm of your hand over the opening of the portal to get glissando effects and fixed pitches. This drum should be tuned very high so that the lower tones are audible when the opening of the sound portal is covered. The drum has a sonority similar to a djembe. It comes in a variety of glazed finishes.Similar to the American Percussion Palm Drum with it's open spout, the Double Palm Drum adds a second spout with a calf skin head. The sound emanates from the open spout, giving the player wider tonal possibilities and variety.
