Name: Thumb Drum
Origin: United States
Class: Membranophone
Category: |
Description: The Thumbdrum is made of clay, glazed on the inside as well as the outside. It measures about 9" by 9" and comes with one bamboo brush. Some of the nice features of this drum are that it is very small, light weight and produces many sounds and pitches. Insert the thumb through the hole from the back of the drum and rest the pointer, middle and ring finger over the top of the sound portal. Next lift one of the fingers, like you're playing a trumpet, and hit the drum head at the same time. This will produce a pitch change. The Thumb drum can be easily held while walking or dancing so if you're one that likes to do so while in a drumming group this may be the perfect drum for you. |

Category: Kettledrum |
Description: Large kettle shaped drums. The pitch can be altered by a foot pedal or hand screws. Also known as 'kettledrums', their origin can be traced back to Europe from around the 13th century. Their original use was for military or state occasions. They were hung in clo4th carriers on either side of the drummer's horse. Typically they are made from copper, but have also been made from silver and wood. Originally the drums were tuned in fourths. Later, Beethoven (1770-1827) eliminated the restrictions of writing music in fourths or fifths only. This opened up the responsibilities for the Timpanist. Up to that time period, the drums were tuned using square-topped screws. Later upgrades included pedal-tuning. |
