Description: The Kilaut is a large frame drum of the Inuit, inhabitants of the Arctic North from Greenland to Alaska. It is traditionally made from a narrow hoop of wood or animal bone and any one of a variety of animal membranes: The Kilaut is used for both social and sacred purposes and is sounded by striking either the skin, the frame, or the handle. My Kilaut is fitted with a very responsive thin goatskin that can be set in motion by the pressure from one's breath. |
