Description: Standing about 10" high, The Finger Drum is a round jug shape with a flared neck or spout on top. The spout also has a 3" drum head glued to it with a sound portal on the side of the drum. The drum can make fixed pitch and glissando sounds and is primarily played with the pointer, middle and ring fingers. |

Description: Usually made with a metal frame. Attached to the frame is a flexible steel plate. Attached to the plate, on either side, is a rubber or wooden ball used as a beater. The thumb is used to apply pressure to the plate. The beaters are mounted on a clock spring. They alternately hit the plate creating the sound. This unique instrument was created in the 20's for special effects in jazz ensemble's. It has been said that this is a very difficult instrument to learn. It sounds somewhat like a musical saw and a cheap bell set! It has been used by many conductors like Schoenberg, Honegger and Henze. An example of its sound can be found in Khachaturian's Piano Concerto as a backup to the violins. |
