Description: This drum comes from a family of three cylindrically shaped drums. Each are double headed and covered with cow skins. These drums are typically rope tension tuned. They are played horizontally with two sticks and usually have a bell mounted on top. They are made from hollowed logs. The Djun Djun traces it's heritage back to the Mali empire around the 12th century. This region of West Africa includes some portions of present day countries of Guinea, Mali, Burkina Faso and Ivory Coast. There are three drums in this Dunun (Djun Djun) family. From the largest to smallest they are Dunumba, Sangban, and Kenkeni. Sometimes all three dununs will be tied together, placed vertically, and played by one person with two sticks. |
