Description: Usually played in a set of two or three different sizes. Tall, narrow, single headed drums played with the hands. The largest drum is the Tumba, the medium drum is the Conga, and the smallest drum is the Quinta. They are covered with calf skin.

Description: This drum is similar to the Aztec Huehuetl, which was believed to be a god forced to endure earthly exile. The ornate carvings on the ancient drums depict the uncompromising energy of the god. One such drum displays a group of captured warriors forced to dance to their own music-making before their hearts were torn out and waved aloft as offering to the Aztec god of war. This Council drum is a floor-standing tom-tom. Intended for solitary meditative practice as well as ceremonial, ritual, and communal drumming. It has a big round sound when played to the full, but can also, in a more intimate setting, the large natural goatskin head sounds with a wonderful complexity, whether played with the hands or with padded mallets. This drum has a rich sound that emphasizes the lower harmonics without sacrificing sound or clarity. |

Description: These 'antique cymbals, are made from brass, bronze, or other alloys. They became a metal version of the castanet. They were also used by dancers as far back as 2000 years ago. Today they can be pitched or non-pitched, depending on the requirements. Probably the most memorable first use was in Berlioz, from the 'Queen Mab' scherzo (Romeo and Juliet). |
